THE LONDON CHRONICLE, July 6-9, 1776 This is the issue with the closest date to the 4th of July we currently have in our inventory, and desirable as such as it is more displayable.
Inside has an item from Boston noting: "Several persons, by virtue of an order of the Congress, have...been committed to prison for refusing to deliver up on oath...all their arms, ammunition & accoutrements which were demanded of them after they had refused to sign an association prescribed by the Congress to defend by arms these United colonies against the hostile attempts of the British fleet & armies...". A bit further on offers a premonition of the Declaration of Independence with: "...question was put, 'Whether, that if the Hon. Congress should, for the safety of the colonies, declare themselves independent of the kingdom of Great Britain, they...will solemnly engage, with their lives & fortunes, to support them in the measures.' It passed unanimously in the affirmative." This is followed by a report from Quebec concerning the military situation there (see).
The back page has a nice item from South Carolina which mentions in part "...no measures should be left unessayed to establish the liberties of America and to place them as far as may be out of the reach of fraudulent schemes to subvert them by negociation; & that this colony should not enter into any treaty or correspondence with the court of Great Britain or with any person or persons under that authority but through the medium of the continental congress."
Not only a great date, but some nice content as well. Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice, clean condition.
