The top of the ftpg. has a report with thoughts that the state of Virginia to come to the aid of Thomas Jefferson: "...out to force upon him, as a free gift, a sum of money sufficient to relieve him from pecuniary embarrassment..." who was in dire financial trouble during the closing months of his life.
