THE SCOTS MAGAZINE, Edinburgh, Scotland, March, 1766

* Repealing the Stamp Act, in a UK magazine

Although formatted much like the more common "Gentleman's Magazine" this is a much more scarce title. Near the beginning are several pages headed "Abstracts of Acts of Parliament" and certainly the most significant of them is: "An Abstract of the Act...to Repeal an Act Made in the Last Session of Parliament, entitled, An Act for Granting & Applying certain stamp duties and other duties, in the British colonies and plantations in America, towards further defraying the expenses of defending, protecting, and securing the same..." (see).
Another article: "The Proper Question Respecting the Expediency of the American Taxation Discussed" begins: "After all that has been said & written upon the great question relative to the right & expediency of taxing America, I think the true British inquiry remains still to be made & answered; which is, whether the imposing taxes on the people of America, or the letting that right lie dormant, will best serve to promote the trade & manufactures of G. Britain..." with more. Then over 2 pages are taken up with: "A Summary of the Arguments Against Repealing the American Stamp Act" (see), and then also: "Necessity of Checking American Insolence".
Most notable is a report prefaced with: "On the 18th of March the King gave the royal assent to the following bills..." and what follows are several, including the most significant: "An Act to repeal an act made in the last session of Parliament, entitled, 'An Act for granting and applying certain stamp-duties & other duties in the British colonies and plantations in America.' " History does note that the repeal of the Stamp Act was effective on March 18 with the King's formal approval. This is that formal announcement.
Near the back are many reports headed: "Affairs in North America", several dealing with the Stamp Act including an item from New York: "...great number of gentlemen assembled...they came to several resolutions for opposing the execution of the stamp act..."with more.
Included is the foldout plate.
