April 15, 1865

EVENING COURIER & REPUBLIC, Buffalo, New York, April 15, 1865  The heads in the first column of the front page announce the horrible news to the people of Buffalo: "AN UNSPEAKABLE HORROR AND CALAMITY ! " "President Lincoln Assassinated!" "Secretary Seward Attacked in His Sick Chamber--His Throat Cut!" "Mr. Lincoln Shot through the Head At Ford's Theatre!" "The Appearance and Escape of the Assassin" "Heart-Rending Scene at the President's Bedside" with more (see). Over a full column of text on the details is provided including: "...the President had been shot through the head above and back of the temporal bone & that some of the brain was oozing out..." with the last ft-g. dispatch noting: "The President is still alive, but he is growing weaker. The ball is lodged in his brain...".
But pages 2 and 3 contains the more recent news of his death, with column heads including: "PRESIDENT LINCOLN DEAD" "Andrew Johnson Sworn Intro Office" "President Lincoln Assassinated--A Horror Unspeakable!" "PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN DEAD" "Secretary Seward Still Alive" "Wilkes Booth, And Another Unknown, the Assassins" 'They Are Still at Large" "The Nation A Mourner" and more. Both pages include additional details of the assassination and of Lincoln's death.
All columns on all 4 pages are black-bordered. Never bound nor trimmed, some archival mends near margins inside, some mild wear at folds with some perforation.
