NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, March 9, 1844 The prime content is on the ship Princeton disaster, in which the then world's largest naval gun exploded killing the Secretary of State & Secretary of the Navy among others. President Tyler was on board but escaped injury (see hyperlink). Much coverage of the event, the funeral procession, plus a subhead: "Narrow Escape of President Tyler", plus a separate article on "The Peacemaker", the naval gun which exploded. And the back pg. has a brief item: "President Tyler has presented $200 to the mother of his black servant who was killed at the time of the recent explosion on board the Princeton."
Other articles include: "Chesapeake & Ohio Canal" "Canal Between the Oceans" concerning a plan for one across the Isthmus of Panama; "Canal Across the Isthmus of Suez" "American In Van Dieman's Land" which is now the island of Tasmania.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, good condition.
This newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia it: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
