July 11, 1862

CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, July 11, 1862

* From the origin of the Civil War

This was one of just a few newspapers from the Confederacy which actually printed: "Confederate States Of America" in the dateline (see images). The front page has a few war-related items such as: "From Grenada, Miss. - Reported Capture of Gen. Curtis & 6000 Federal Prisoners" "From Jackson, Miss. - Latest From Vicksburg--Bombardment Continued--Federals Still Digging at their Canal" "Latest from New Orleans - Mutiny In a Federal Regiment - The Guerrillas Hovering About the City - Butler  Imprisons A Lady" "News From the Coast" & a few other items.
Page 2 has a lengthy letter which provides some fascinating reading: "Narrative of an Escaped Prisoner" taking 1 1/2 columns. Also on pg. 2: "The English Press on the Battle of the Chickahominy". Page 3 is entirely taken up with ads while the back page has more war content including: "Picayune Butler at Baton Rouge" "The Rebel Gen. Pettigrew Wounded" "Nashville" & "Our Army Correspondence" which is quite lengthy.
Complete in 4 pages, never bound nor trimmed, minor wear at the folds, generally very nice condition.
