April 26, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, April 26, 1865  This is a single sheet, broadside (printed on one side only) newspaper from this former Confederate city which had only fell to the Yankee forces less than two weeks prior, on April 13.
Over half of the front page is taken up with reports concerning the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln, assassinated some 12 days prior. The top of the first column includes: "The Remains Of President Lincoln Lying In State In The Capitol" "The Sorrow Of A Great People" "The Capture of An Assassin" "$120,000 Reward ! " "Mr. Seward Rapidly Improving!" "Speech By President Johnson" (see) with much related text.
Also on the front page: "Additional News--More Victories" and "Important Orders From The War Department--Trade Restriction Removed", some advertisements, and three: "Military Orders". Apparently someone had clipped out another military order, hence the missing piece to the right side (see).
Measures 14 1/2 by 20 1/2 inches, great condition save for the clipped piece.
