CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, Oct. 19, 1863
* Battle of Chickamauga
* Jefferson Davis address
This was one of the few newspapers which had: "Confederate States of America" printed in the masthead (see). There is much reporting on the Civil War--from the Confederate perspective--including front page items headed: "Important From Virginia--Another Battle Near Manassas--Reported Defeat of the Enemy & Capture of Several Thousand Prisoners--Hard fighting at Bristol Station--Northern News" "From the West--Enemy's Movements in Mississippi" "From General Bragg's Army--Great Flood In Tennessee River--Gen. D. H. Hill Relieved of Command" "News From the Island" "Later from the North" "From Northern Virginia--Interesting Reports of the Operations of our Army" "Latest from the Front--Capture of Prisoners & Stores--Missionary Ridge via Chickamauga" and more.
But perhaps the best item on the front page is found at the very center, headed: "Address of President Davis to the Army of Tennessee" which begins: "Soldiers--A grateful country has recognized your arduous service & rejoiced over your glorious victory on the field of Chickamauga..." with much more, signed in type: Jefferson Davis (see).
The back page is almost entirely taken up with ads & notices, some of which are illustrated. Single sheet, nice condition.
