August 14, 1783

DREWRY'S DERBY MERCURY, England, Aug. 14, 1783  Page 3 has an historic report: "...Letter from New York dated July 9, 1783...a very extraordinary event has taken place: Gen. Washington has resigned his command and is going to Virginia to become a private citizen. I am told his letter is wonderfully well written. He recommends harmony & forgiveness; vindicates the refugees and Loyalists..." and a bit more. Page 4 has editorial comment on this: "General Washington's resignation of his high situation as Commander in Chief of all the forces belonging to the United States in America, at the same time that it reflects the highest honor upon him & finishes the character of heroism...iis a clear & demonstrative proof of the falsehood...as no man in his senses can suppose that had such an event been at all likely, this great man...would have withdrawn himself from its services & left it to itself before it had got fairly upon its legs or its security permanently established." with more (see).
Page 2 has: "The uniform of the American officers of Cavalry...is blue, flashed pockets, broad button-holes with gold, black and white cockades. In appearance they are a very different species of men from what the deluded people of this country were taught to believe..." and a bit more (see).
Four pages, nice condition.
