March 22, 1876

THE JOURNAL, Evansville, Indiana, March 22, 1876

* Buffalo Bill - William Cody
* Young County, Texas sheriff killed ?

The back page has a terrific report which I don't believe we've found in a period newspaper before. It is headed: "Buffalo Bill Murders A Sheriff", with the text including in part: "...A few weeks ago he went to Texas & after being there awhile the sheriff of Young County attempted to arrest him, when he resisted. The sheriff and he drew their weapons at the same moment & fired together. The sheriff's shot took effect, but Buffalo Bill missed his mark. He grasped a rifle, however, and fired, the shot piercing the heart of the sheriff, killing him instantly. Buffalo Bill, though badly wounded, made his escape..." with a bit more (see photo). I doubt the report is true as there is much legend attached to the name "Buffalo Bill", much of it unproven. Still, interesting reading.
Eight pages, binding slits at the blank spine margin, otherwise nice condition.
