RICHMOND ENQUIRER, Virginia, July 17, 1863

* Battle of Gettysburg
* From the rebel capital (rare)

One of the less common Confederate newspapers, and from the capital of the Confederacy as well giving added significance to the great content in this issue.
Certainly the most significant content would be the 2 1/2 columns on the front page taken up with the: "List of Casualties In the Battles of Gettysburg, Penn." which includes many subheads, by division, and including in part: "Southampton Grays" "Rough & Ready Guards" "Ebenezer Grays" "26th North Carolina" "Casualties among Officers in Pickett's Division" and more.
Included is some text concerning the battle as well, bits including: "The losses in company officers & men is very severe...behaved with conspicuous gallantry & was killed on the foeld. Brig. Gen. Armistead was last seen standing on the enemy's ramparts with his hat on his sword, cheering his men on. He fell wounded in their fortifications & was thus captured...the brigade of Gen. Armistead was unparalleled. His men moved to the charge with regularity & conduct equal to that of dress parade...Indeed, the heroism of the whole division...is beyond praise. The celebrated 'charge of the six hundred' at Balaklavva was not more daring & is not less entitled to live in history than of the five thousand Virginians who stormed the heights of Gettysburg..." with more (see).
Also on the front page is an article: "Atrocities Of War" which talks of the forbearance of Gen. Lee at Gettysburg compared to actions of the Yankee military (see).
The back page has much on the war as well, including: "From Gen. Lee's Army" which begins with: "I am with the army at last, having crossed the Potomac yesterday..." and includes some talk of the Battle of Gettysburg including: "...Col. Terry, of the 34th Virginia, was badly wounded in the main fight at Gettysburg...Though our boys fought well at Gettysburg, it is thought they would have fought much better, but for the fine & luxurious living which they had in all parts of Pennsylvania...". Also on the back pg: "Proclamation By the President" concerning a call for soldiers, signed in type: Jefferson Davis.
A wealth of fine content relating to not only the Battle of Gettysburg, but other military action as well.
A single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead (not uncommon; conserved space due to shortage of paper) with various wear at the several folds. Some of the folds have some loss as can be seen, more so to the top quadrant, affecting in part the casualty report from the Battle of Gettysburg. But the majority of this report is unaffected by loss. Some archival mends at folds and the margins. Several creases as well.
