October 29, 1861

THE DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, October 29, 1861

* Rare Confederate title
* From the deep South

Truly Confederate newspapers from New Orleans are very difficult to find, as Admiral Farragut entered the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-April, 1862 and finally took New Orleans on April 28. Shortly thereafter Benjamin Butler moved in and took control of the city which surrendered without a fight. So "Confederate" issues from New Orleans are limited to those published between Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and the end of April, 1862, just a brief 15 month period.
War reports on the front page include: "From Our Army In The West" which takes most of a column, and: "Another Victory" "Battle of La Mosa" "108 Confederates Rout Four Companies of U.S. Regulars--One Company of New Mexican Volunteers Taken Prisoner--Federal Loss , 20 Killed--Only One Confederate Killed & 3 Wounded." Pg. 2 reports: "Battle At Fredericktown, Mo." "Gen. Thompson Retires" "Heavy Loss Of The Enemy" & "The Battle Of Leesburg" Addition Particulars".
Back page ad: "Sale Of Negroes". Four pages, even foxing, good condition.
