March 14, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, March 14, 1865

* Rare Confederate title
* Civil War nears the end

Published less than a month before this capital city would fall to Yankee forces, being one of the last major cities of the South to fall.
The front page includes a notice headed: "Headquarters Reserve, North Carolina concerning enlisting soldiers, which incorporates a document from the "Headquarters Army of Northern Virginia" signed in type by: R. E. Lee, General (see). Also on the front page is an Act of the Confederate Congress concerning the Home Guard, and yet another recruitment document from the "Hdq'rs. Armies of the C. States" being Lee's General Order #2 offering pardon to deserters of the military if they return to service within 20 days (see). The Act is signed in type: R. E. Lee, General. Among the front page ads is one: "Negro Auction and Commission House!"
The back page has a wealth of reporting on the War as well, including: "War News--Kinston & Goldsboro" "Northern News" which includes 3 dispatches concerning the taking of Charlottesville signed in type by: U.S. Grant (see), plus: "A Live Yankee In Charleston" "A Visit to Fort Sumter" "The Church in Lee's Army" and more. One of the ads is for the: "Sale of Negroes".
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, typical among Confederate newspapers from late in the war, a very discreet archival mend across page 2, almost unnoticeable, otherwise in great condition.
