NEW YORK TIMES, Sept. 11, 1950

* First ever New York Times "Daily" crossword puzzle

Although today the presence of a crossword puzzle in this daily newspaper is more than commonplace, it was in this edition that the first daily puzzle appeared.
The New York Times originally considered crossword puzzles frivolous, "a primitive form of mental exercise" but eventually published its first puzzle in its Sunday edition of Feb. 15, 1942 (see our issue #624520), becoming a daily feature on this date of Sept. 11, 1950. See this link from a 2001 edition of the Times verifying the significance of this issue.
Also of interest is a sports page headline: "DiMaggio Wallops 3 Homers as Yankees Route Senators...".
Complete in 46 pages, this is the "Rag Paper Edition" printed on very high quality newsprint for institutional uses. Great condition.
