August 30, 1775

THE CONNECTICUT JOURNAL & NEW HAVEN POST-BOY, August 30, 1775

* The Olive Branch Petition
* 2nd Continental Congress
* American Revolutionary War

Over half of the front page is taken up with a very historic document, being the second petition of the Continental Congress to the King of England--commonly referred to as the Olive Branch Petition--approved by Congress on July 8, 1775. This document was an attempt to assert the rights of the colonists while maintaining their loyalty to the British crown. King George refused to read the petition and on August 23 would proclaim that the colonists had "proceeded to open and avowed rebellion."  See this hyperlink for the full text, as damage to the margins of this issue causes some text loss.
There is much more fine war-related content in this issue (photos show some) but it is overwhelmed by the significance of the Olive Branch Petition on the front page.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, however damage  and loss to 3 of the margins do cause loss of text. Fortunately, the only text loss to the Olive Branch Petition is the last  8 lines of the first column. There is no other first column loss, and the document ends in the middle of the 3 columns.
Due to the loss, priced at a fraction of its value if the condition were nice (we sold the Penna. Ledger with a page 2 printing of the Olive Branch Petition for $4,300).
