October 06, 1937

NEW YORK TIMES, October 6, 1937

* President Franklin D. Roosevelt
* Quarantine Speech (1st report)

The front page has several headings concerning what is known as F.D.R.'s "Quarantine Speech" in which he suggests an international quarantine of the aggressor nations as an alternative to the political climate of American neutrality and non-intervention that was prevalent at the time. Although not specifically named, the countries implied were Italy, Japan, and Germany.
The front page headline reads: "ROOSEVELT URGES 'CONCERTED ACTION' FOR PEACE AND ARRAIGNS WAR MAKERS; LEAGUE COMMITTEE CONDEMNS JAPAN" with subheads. (see) Included is the full text of the speech, which carries over to an inside page. A very historic speech setting America's position on what would become World War II. Always nice to have notable events in history reported in this World famous publication.
Other news, sports and advertisements. Complete in 52 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Nice condition.
