August 06, 1936

THE NEW YORK TIMES, August 6, 1936

* Jesse Owens victories - 200 meter gold
* Olympic games in Berlin Germany
* Adolph Hitler in power at the time

The top of the front has two column headings: "Owens Completes Triple As 5 Olympic Marks Fall" "U. S. Ace Sprints 200 Meters in 0:20.7, a Record Feat--Meadows Takes Vault After Dramatic Struggle--Carpenter Wins" (see)
The text carries over to the sport's section where there is a  nice five column headline: "Owens Completes Triple as Five Olympic Records Fall" with photo. Much more on the Olympics here.
A sidebar to the Olympic games was Adolph Hitler's refusal to acknowledge the achievements of the African-American athletes, not surprising given his belief that only his superior German Aryan race would dominate at the games.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 42 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.
