April 14, 1865

THE NEW YORK TIMES, April 14, 1865  The headlines of the day would be far from the event that would shock the nation later that evening. The headlines portrayed a nation beginning to heal from its wounds with the end of the Civil War, with: "The Era Of Peace" "The Closing Up of the War" "The Military Establishment to be Reduced" & more (see). The text would begin with the document from the Secretary of War as shown, beginning the process of shutting down the war, followed by a document signed by: U.S.Grant. Other ftpg. heads note: "THE SURRENDER" "Full Details of the Great Event from an Eye-Witness" "The Interview Between Lee & Grant" "The Dignified & Amiable Character of the Scene" "Signing of the Articles of Capitulation by Lee" with more (see). But later this day President Abraham Lincoln would be assassinated, changing history forever. The headlines of the next morning would tell the story.
