March 27, 1671

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, March 27, 1671

* Earliest of English language newspapers to be had
* 17th century wine

About one-third of the front page has an interesting report concerning wines, beginning; "His Majesty hath been likewise pleased to issue out another Proclamation, bearing date the 24th instant, for the prizing of Wines; in which His Majesty doth declare, 'That for one year next following...Canary wines, Allegants and Muscadels be not sold in grosse at above 36 pounds the butt or pipe, and twelve pence the pint by retail; and that Sacks and Malagoes be not sold in grosse at above 32 pounds the butt, and eleven pence the pint by retail, and that French wines..." with much more (see). Unusual to find such an early & lengthy wine-themed report on the front page of a newspaper.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 7 by 11 inches, some foxing, worm holes in the first column do not affect the noted text, some creases, otherwise good condition. This is the world's oldest continually published English language newspaper, having begun in 1665 and is still publishing today.
