March 14, 1666

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, March 14, 1666  (by today's calendar this would be 1667)

* Earliest of newspapers to be had
* Re. the Great Fire - advertisement
* Very early Virginia mention

The top of the front page begins with a nice--and rare--report concerning the quality of ship building in Virginia, with: "...arrived at Milford Haven, a new Fregat, built in Virginia, by some merchants of this town, of a very fine mould, and an able vessel for service; she was laden over from St. James River with tobacco; by the success in the building of this vessel, we doubt not but other persons may be encouraged to follow their example; the timber proving fit and serviceable, and the expences far less than in other places." (see)
The bottom of the back page has: "An Advertisement" that would seem to relate to the Great Fire of London, beginning: "All artificers of the several trades that must be used in re-building the Royal Exchange..." (see)
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 7 by 11 inches, great condition.
