July 09, 1685

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, July 9, 1685

* Battle of Sedgemoor- Somerset, England
* Monmouth Rebellion comes to an end
* James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth

This is a doubly historic issue, as over half of the ftpg. contains an extremely early & timely report on the historic Battle of Sedgemoor in England, prefaced with: "Yesterday morning his Majesty received the news of the entire Defeat of the Rebels, of which we have the following account." and what followed is the detailed text which takes all of the first column and one-third of the second column (see). The back page contains another significant item under the dateline: "Whitehall, July 8 at 12 a Clock at night." reading "His Majesty has just now received an account that the late Duke of Monmouth was taken this morning in Dorsetshire, being hid in a ditch, and that he is in the hands of my Lord Lumley."
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 6 1/2 by 11 inches, some great condition.
