July 11, 1816

INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE, Boston, July 11, 1816

* Freedom of religious expression protected on campus

Page 2 has an interesting article: "Religious Liberty" which is prefaced with a note stating the piece is taken from the new charter of the University in New Hampshire and is: "...of the highest value, & will reflect immortal honor on the Legislature...". Portions include: "That perfect freedom of religious opinions shall be enjoyed by all the officers and students of the University, and no officer or student shall be deprived of any honors, privileges or benefits of the institution on account of his religious creed or belief..." with more, ending with: "...that any man of an enlightened understanding should object, in a country which professes religious liberty, to such sentiments, would be surprising, if we did not know the power and oppression of parties."
Four pages, very nice condition.
