THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Aug. 12, 1667 The back page has a fascinating report datelined from Whitehall, reading: "This day his Majesty by the advice of his Councel ordered his Proclamation to be issued out for the discovery & apprehension of John Lockier, Timothy Butler, Thomas Blood, commonly called Captain Blood, and other persons who in a riotous & rebellious manner at Darrington near Wentbridge...violently set upon & assaulted the guards intrusted with the care of conducting one John Mason, a prisoners for treason, from the Tower of London to the city of York, killing & desparately wounding several of the said guard...since lurking in secret places...100 pounds sterling shall be given & paid to any person as are compence for their good service who shall apprehend & bring in the said Lockier, Butler, Blood & Mason..." with a bit more (see ). There were at least two movies titled "Captain Blood" but it is thought they were based on a fictional character.
