This was a decidedly Tory newspaper, supportive of the British efforts in America. As a consequence this newspaper ended publication a few weeks after this issue in anticipation of the British departing Philadelphia in June.
The front page is taken up with a lengthy document headed: "In Congress, April 22, 1778" taken from "Extracts from Rebel Papers" which concerning the on-going troubling relationship between England & the colonies, with some consideration for talks of peace, but with several reason why it cannot happen. Included is a list of 7 reasons why the colonists think the offers from England are disingenuous, one being: "Because believing the Americans wearied with war, they suppose they will accede to their terms for the sake of peace." What follows is a list of 8: "...in a clear point of view the weakness & wickedness of the enemy. Their Weakness:..." followed by a list of four (see), then: "The wickedness and insincerity of the enemy appear from the following considerations:..." witch is a list of eight, one being: "...a declaration of the intentions of the British parliament concerning the exercise of the right of imposing taxes within these States...", then followed by concluding statements which are highly critical of the pretended efforts of the British (see). A great document clarifying the status of the Revolutionary War at this point.
Page 2 begins with: "The principal claims of the majority of the people of America are--to be relieved from parliamentary taxation and to be placed as they stood in the year 1773...". This is followed by a request for clothing because: "...the army arae in present and pressing want of shoes, stockings and shirts...".
The back page has a: "Draught of a Bill for declaring the Intentions of the Parliament...Concerning the Exercise of the Right of Imposing Taxes with his Majesty's Colonies, Provinces, & Plantations in North America." which is followed by a: "Draught of a Bill to enable his Majesty to appoint Commissioners with sufficient powers to treat, consult & agree, upon the means of quieting the disorders now subsisting in certain of the Colonies, Plantations, and Provinces of North America".
Four pages, Royal coat-of-arms engraving in the masthead, numeric notations in margins next to ads, minor archival mend to a bottom margin, generally nice condition.
