April 03, 1860

NEW YORK TIMES, April 3, 1860

* The famous Pony Express takes off
* Debut run

The front page has a small, yet historically significant, article: "The Pony Express" "The Arrangements Completed--The Time Table" with a dateline of St. Joseph, April 2, beginning: "The arrangements are all completed whereby the first pony of the California express will leave here to-morrow at 5 o'clock p.m...." with more, and ending with: "...Dispatches will go from any point east to any place in California in about 205 hours. Dispatches are already coming in for this route."
The Pony Express has become part of the romance & lore of the Old West, however as a practical enterprise it would last but 18 months, being outdated by the telegraph.
Great to have this content on the front page. Eight pages, very nice condition.
