April 01, 1746

THE AMERICAN MAGAZINE, (Boston), April, 1746  This is a very rare title, actually the first successful magazine in American history done in the traditional magazine format (Christian History preceded this by several years but was exclusively a chronicle of the Great Awakening) although it only lasted for about 3 years. But two previous attempts at a magazine in the colonies only lasted for a few issues--one published by Ben Franklin. The content & format is much like similar publications in London with various political discussions and an "Historical Chronicle" near the back with news of the day from Europe, Philadelphia, New York, & Boston (see).
Among the articles are: "The Speech of His Excellency William Shirley to the Assembly of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England" "On Separating from the Churches"  "Journal of the Proceedings & Debates in the Political Club" "Thanksgiving Sermon" and much more.
Complete in 50 pages, bound without a full title/index page. Some foxing, generally in nice, clean condition on relatively thick-stock paper. Measures 5 by 7 3/4 inches. A very rare opportunity for an extremely scarce magazine.
