THE COLUMBIAN MAGAZINE, Philadelphia, May, 1787  This title has the honor of being the first successful American magazine, having begun in September, 1786 and lasting until December, 1792.
Among the articles within are the continued: "Considerations on Religion in General, but more Particularly on the Christian", and the continued: "Comparative view of the Animals of America & Those of Europe...from Mr. Jefferson's Notes on Virginia", being Thomas Jefferson, and this article takes over 7 pages. Also: "Description of a Candle Case", "Account of some Remains of Ancient Works on the Muskingum, with a Plan of These Works" which also has a plate of it, however approximately half of the plate is missing in this issue. Also: "Extract from Dr. Franklin's Maritime Observations..." which takes 2 pages.
Near the back is "Intelligence" which has the latest news of the day. It includes an interesting letter from London which includes: "...you are falling to pieces and will soon repent your independence..." (see photos). Also: "We have the pleasure to announce the arrival of General Washington on Sunday last, who was met & escorted into the city...", likely arriving in town for the Constitutional Convention, of which he was President. Also a report of the meeting of the Cincinnati Society, noting that: "His excellency general Washington, president general...". Also a very significant report: "The following is an accurate state of the FEDERAL CONVENTION as assembled yesterday at the state house of this city: His Excellency General Washington, Esq. President..." followed by a list of the representatives by state (see photos). Great to have this listing in a Philadelphia publication from the month of the beginning of the Constitutional Convention.
The back page has a list of marriages which includes the nephew of George Washington, married to the daughter of Henry Lee.
Complete in 52 pages and in good condition. The Map is incomplete and archivally mended on the reverse side.
