THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY OR, AMERICAN ORACLE OF LIBERTY, Worcester, Sept. 3, 1778

* Paul Revere masthead engraving
* Revolutionary War era

This newspaper published by the famed Isaiah Thomas is undoubtedly one of the more significant & notable titles of the Revolutionary War era. It is worth nothing that the famed printer Isaiah Thomas was the publisher, having begun this newspaper in 1770. An ardent patriotic, as the extended title to his newspaper would suggest: "...Or American Oracle of Liberty", Thomas was a constant target of the Royalist government. He began his newspaper in Boston but upon British occupation of the city in 1775, rather than cease publication he moved his press further west and continued printing in Worcester. This issue is one which was printed in Worcester.
Also, the handsomely engraved masthead was created by none other than Paul Revere, who did masthead engravings for but a few New England newspapers of the 18th century, this arguably being his most famous.
Over one-third of the front page is taken up with letters signed by the King of France: Louis, and Gerary & Henry Laurens of the American Congress, relating to the treaty of alliance between the United States & France. Also on the ftpg: "To be SOLD, the BRITISH RIGHTS in America, Consisting of, among other Articles..." with more text (see).
Page 2 has much reporting from the House of Commons, much relating to America. News from Boston has information on the Revolutionary War, as do reports from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Poughkeepsie, and Worcester. Page 3 has: "A Declaration" signed by Henry Laurens, President of Congress, denouncing peace commissioner George Johnstone for attempted bribery of American leaders.
Complete in 4 pages but this is a damaged issue, with many archival mends at the spine  & the folds, with some loss of text as well. A nice opportunity for a $1500+ newspaper for dramatically less.
