October 04, 1957

MIRROR NEWS, Los Angeles, October 4, 1957

* Sputnik 1 (early 1st report)
* World's 1st orbiting artificial satellite
* Space race begins

A very significant report in the space race, with a bold headline reading: "RUSS CLAIM FIRST EARTH SATELLITE" plus a subhead: "Beat U.S. Plans for 'Baby Moon' ". A very early report as almost all others reports of this historic report are dated October 5.
This event shocked the American scientific community and sufficiently scared the Americans into an all-out space race. There was great fear at the time of Soviet dominance of space and the potential use of satellites for military purposes (see hyperlink for much more).
A very significant issue for any space-themed collection.
The complete issue with all 4 sections, very nice, clean condition.
