September 24, 1862

WASHINGTON TELEGRAPH, Arkansas, September 24, 1862

* Very rare Confederate title

A very rare Confederate newspaper, as this was the only Confederate newspaper from the state of Arkansas which survived throughout the Civil War. With increasing distress upon the printing industry with Yankee incursions throughout the state, all other newspapers either folded or were forced to suspend publication at some point during the war.
Over a full column of the front page is report "No. 6" of an in depth analysis of "The Confederate Constitution". Another report from the Memphis Bulletin begins: "Reports from the South are to the effect that Bragg has flanked Buell and is en route for Kentucky; also that Jeff Davis has notified Congress that he has now more conscripts than is now needed..." with more (see). The front page also has two nice illustrated runaway slave ads. The back page has a column-long editorial. There is also a letter of thanks to the ladies of Washington for their care of the wounded soldiers. "Telegraphic" reports provide the latest information on the Civil War, beginning: "Our last issue contained the account of the defeat of the combined forces of McClellan and Pope at Manassas and represented the northern army in full retreat towards Alexandria..." with much more. More war-related items as well.
This is a folio size, single sheet newspaper, confirmed as complete as a single sheet by the Arkansas History Commission. Included with this issue is the letter from their Archival Manager noting that their microfilm files verify it is a single sheet. There is some archival strengthening at the margins and across a horizontal fold and being rather transparent causing no loss of readability. Some wear at a horizontal fold does cause a few small holes repaired by the archival mend. Generally in nice condition.
