Pages 4 and 5 contain the full text of an act recently passed by Parliament, reading in part: "...granting Certain Duties in the British Colonies and Plantations in America, and for improving and securing the Trade between the same and Great Britain."
Known as the Sugar Act, it actually placed a duty on a variety of goods. In Parliament it was called the American Revenue Act, and its primary function was to raise money to help alleviate the debt from the French and Indian War, as well as to defray the expense in managing colonial territories as stated in the first paragraph with: "...for defraying the expences of defending and protecting, and securing the same." The Sugar Act was significant in heightening the colonists' concerns about the intent of the British Parliament and helped the growing movement that became the American Revolution.
Complete in eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 3/4 inches, wear at the margins, more so to the first leaf, some damp staining near the spine. Terrific to have this very significant Act of Parliament in a London newspaper.
