THE GENTLEMAN'S & LONDON MAGAZINE, (Dublin, Ireland), August, 1779

* Rare political cartoons
* Surrender of Saratoga
* Revolutionary War

Not to be confused with the "Gentleman's Magazine", this is a much more rare title although the format is very similar to "Gentleman's".
Certainly the most fascinating content is a partially damaged foldout print titled: "The Political Raree-Show, or a Picture of Parties & Politics during & at the Close of the Session of Parliament, June, 1779". The print shows a man directing a boy to view a peepshow of events and actions of the British government, as well as international affairs involving England. The peepshow presents 12 views in three columns; number 2, at the top of the middle column, is captioned: "The generals in America doing nothing, or worse than nothing." It depicts General William Howe asleep outside his tent while in the background General Burgoyne kneels as he surrenders to the Americans at Saratoga (see). The next image shows Burgoyne and Howe defending their war conduct in Parliament while Lord North sleeps, captioned: "Proving that they have done every thing." (see). The first print captioned: "The Distressed Financier" relates some to the Revolutionary War, but is more of Judaica interest, as it shows Lord North borrowing money from the Jews while Spain declares war on England (see). The other images do not relate to America.
Although this foldout plate has the bottom portion missing and has some archival mends to the blank reverse, fortunately the Saratoga print is in nice condition with but minimal effect to the other two noted.
The magazine begins with an article relating to this plate. See the hyperlink for what the complete print would look like. Period political cartoons concerning the Revolutionary War in America are exceedingly rare.
Another foldout plate in this issue is a sheet of music (see).
Complete in 64 pages, disbound without a full title/contents page, measures 5 by 8 inches, some foxing throughout, nearly close-trimmed at the right margin but not touching any letters, generally good condition.
