October 03, 1863

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, October 3, 1863

* General Robert E. Lee
* Battle of Gettysburg official report

Not only a nice newspaper from the Confederacy, but from the capital of the Confederates States of America. And this issue has some terrific front page content on the Battle of Gettysburg.
An exceedingly significant issue, as over half of the front page is taken up with Robert E. Lee's report on the historic battle of Gettysburg and the events preceding it and immediately following it. The report is headed: "The Invasion of the North--General lee's Official Report Of His Campaign In Pennsylvania And Maryland". The report is datelined "Headquarters Army Northern Virginia, July 31, 1863" and is signed in type at its conclusion: R. E. Lee, General. The text is very detailed and all-encompassing, giving his perspective on the efforts at Gettysburg (see photos for portions).

The back page has an editorial relating to Lee's official report. Although earlier editorial reports tended to put a positive spin on Lee's work in Pennsylvania, this editorial has at the beginning: "We have today the first official report of General Lee's many military operations...that distinguished commander's own account of the late Pennsylvania campaign and of his unsuccessful battle at Gettysburg..." with more (see photos).
Other back page items include: "Latest From the United States" "Latest From Our Army in Tennessee--The Battle of chickamauga--The Situation of The Two Armies--Will There Be Another Battle?" with several subheads.

A terrific issue with Lee's report found entirely on the front page. Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead and--fortunately--in very nice, clean condition.
