EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Aug. 14, 1779 Most of the front page is taken up with the continued: "History of the Opposition, During the Last Session of Parliament" which is almost entirely taken up with discussion on the situation in America. A few items include: "That the quitting of the Jerseys & the going to sea with the whole army in July, 1777, terrified other provinces from submitting for fear of being deserted..." and "...When the tumults began at Boston, when licentiousness & riot exhibited their first wild scenes in Fanueuil Hall, the encouraged the piece by applauding the actors..." and: "...An army was lost in America. A rebellion, which seemed to stagger even under partial & ill-pursued defeats, became firmly established by victory. The spirits of this country began to sink..." and more.
Inside has content on the Revolutionary War, including: "...that General Prevost had been repulsed twice in his attack on Charlestown; the town had offered to capitulate..." & more. Also the text of a broadside posted in public streets of Philadelphia headed: "For Our Country's Good" which protests the high prices of goods & the depreciation of money, ending with a forewarning: "...we will bring every article down to what it was last Christmas, or we will down with those who oppose it. We have turned out against the enemy & we will not be eaten up by monopolizers & forestallers." signed in type: "Come on Coolly". This is followed by a report from New York concerning the war (see). Also: "...accounts from the Susquehannah inform us that a party of Colonel Butler's Loyalists & Indians had cut off the settlements at Penn's Valley...".
Four pages, folio size, some notations in ads & margins, very nice condition.
