EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Sept. 8, 1777

* General George Washington letters

Page 2 begins with: "America - Philadelphia--Extract of a letter from Gen. Washington to Congress Middle Brook, June 20, 1777" which relates encouraging news from his army in encountering the troops of General Howe near,  Brunswick, New Jersey, and ending: "...the people were flying to arms in every quarter to oppose him." This is followed by another "...letter from Gen. Washington to Congress...Middle Brook, June 22..." which begins: "I have the honour & pleasure to inform you that the enemy evacuated Brunswick this morning & retired to Amboy, burning many houses as they went along...I therefore detached three brigades under the command of Major-General Green..." with more detail (see). And there is yet a third letter from the camp at Middle Brook which details the military events there (see).
Further on is a letter form Staten Island with good military reporting (see), followed by two letters from New York, one from Newport, Rhode Island, and one from Halifax, Nova Scotia. There is more war-related reporting carrying over to page 3 as well (see for some), a few bits including: "...It is imagined that Howe's and Burgoyne's armies are very near together; if so, you will soon hear of a general overthrow of the Yankees." and: "...The provincials say that they had no force at Ticonderoga but a small flying army; the King's troops allow that they were a flying army for they went so fast from Ticonderoga to Skensborough that they thought they had wings." and "Washington is flying from place to place and knows not what to do...".
Four pages, folio size, some period notations in ads & margins, very nice condition.
