EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Aug. 16, 1777 One-third of the front page is an article: "On Dueling". Page 2 has a letter from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, which includes: "...letter...at the lower Shawanese town advising me that...A body of Indians of the Mingoe tribe are certainly in arms, & on their march for Philadelphia. I am sorry to observe the savages seem determined to sacrifice themselves to the will of the Congress." followed by a few other American tidbits.
Another report includes: "...it is then expected that an engagement with, or a dislodgement of Washington's army, will be the first thing attempted...The 5000 men...dispatched by General Howe upon a secret expedition...had gone up the Hudson & had arrived by secret marches to Lake George...the army of Gen. Burgoyne was advanced within four miles of Ticonderoga...Gen. Arnold has dispatched a very large party to reinforce Gen. Gates & means himself to advance with his main body immediately...". Additional American reports including details of a case of torture to a British soldier by Americans, and that: "...acquainted General Howe of the case. The General ...sent an express demanding from Washington a surrender of the murderers, which the latter readily complied with..." (see).
