EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, June 16, 1777

* Captain James Cook explorations
* Revolutionary War

Nearly two-thirds of the front page is taken up with: "Extract from Mr. Forster's Voyage round the World: Containing an Account of an Unfortunate Accident which happened at the island of Tanna [Tonga]" Forster was a part of Captain James Cooks second voyage to the Pacific. This account tells of the incident in which one of the natives was shot dead by one of Cook's crew, and further on is: "...Captain Cook resolved to punish the marine with the utmost vigour for having transgressed his positive orders...".
Pages 2 & 3 have various Revolutionary War reports, a few bits including: "...received some ...dispatches from Gen. Howe at New York with proposals which had been made him of a reconciliation...that the Congress have sent two gentlemen to Sir General Howe with some dispatches said to be of a nature which will probably bring on a reconciliation.". Also: "...that Gen. Sir Guy Carleton had passed the lakes...marched without any obstacle to Crown Point which he found abandoned...proceeded towards Ticonderoga & fell in with a large detachment of the rebels whom he attacked and defeated..." and "...that the King's troops at Rhode Island and New York are in remarkable good spirits but that the army in the Jerseys, particularly at Amboy, are very sickly...we learn that General Washington's army hath been lately reinforced with 4000 men; & that from preparations making by General Howe it is expected he will open the campaign with an attack on the main body of Washington's army...". Also a letter form Pensacola and two letters from Gosport.
Four pages, folio size, period notations on ads and margins, very nice condition.
