EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, Feb. 22, 1777 Page 2 has various reports concerning the Revolutionary War including: "A letter from Rhode Island, dated Jan. 8, says...brought us confirmation of the news of General Lee's being taken, and also of General Washington's being defeated. We hope before the month is out that Philadelphia will be in our possession as our troops received orders this day to hold themselves in readiness for the immediate siege of that important city; they are already within five miles of it." Further on are some naval accounts, and also: "...there has been an engagement in the Jerseys between the British troops and the Provincials; the latter are cut off; the people here are all in confusion. The Congress broke up before the capture of Lee; Washington had told them there was no safety for them in Philadelphia; Hancock made a farewell oration to that assembly until they should meet in some place of greater security." (see) there is also a letter from Newport, Rhode Island noting: "...a certainty that General Lee is taken prisoners...a scouting party of the Light Horse met a farmer carrying dispatches from him to General Washington & threatened him with death if he did not conduct them to the place where Lee was...You will hear the news of 900 Hessians being taken by the enemy by the following stratagem. A ship of ours being taken with clothing...Lee dressed his people in their cloaths, the Hessians mistook them for British troops & were surrounded & taken...".
