THE NEW YORK TIMES, September 7, 1875  The front page of this issue carries a column wide report "Troubles In Mississippi - Disturbance at a Political Meeting - Several White Men and Negroes Killed". This riot began at this gathering when some men brought liquor to the event, which Clinton had a law prohibiting the sale of liquor. "When the colored Marshal approached  them and forbade the drinking. This order was not regarded, and when the Marshal attempted to take the bottle out of Siveley's hand Siveley struck him over the head with. Senator Caldwell, colored, started to settle the difficulty, and was followed by some twenty negroes... Some one fired a shot, which was followed by a general firing and a stampede..." In the end, at least forty negores were killed, many others wounded.
