August 02, 1864

THE NATIONAL UNIONIST, Lexington, Kentucky, Aug. 2, 1864  A very rare semi-weekly newspaper that lasted only from April 8, 1864 through Sept. 4, 1865. This is the volume 1 number 33 issue. This title is not listed in Gregory nor the Union List of Serials.
Kentucky was a border state during the Civil War, officially neutral at the beginning of the war, but after a failed attempt by Confederate General L. Polk to take the state for the Confederacy, the legislature petitioned the Union for assistance & thereafter became solidly under union control, although some newspapers remained pro-Confederate in their stance.
Among the items in this issue are: "Kentucky Politics" "Kentucky's Naval Heroes" "Gone to 'Dixie's Land' " "Summary of News" "She Rebel Devils" & much more. Plus the top of page 2 has a political ad supporting "For President, Abraham Lincoln..." (see)
Four pages, a few very discreet archival mends, a small rubbing hole to the right side of the front leaf deters very little, very nice, clean condition.
