April 17, 1782

THE PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL & THE WEEKLY ADVERTISER, Philadelphia, April 17, 1782

* John Adams letter

One of my favorite decorative mastheads of the Revolutionary War era (see). The entire front page is taken up with "An Act to Raise Effective Supplies for the year 1782" for the state of Pennsylvania. Page 2 has a report from London beginning: "Yesterday at one o'clock & not before, Earl Cornwallis arrived in the metropolis, accompanied by General Arnold & his family. His Lordship brings information that he left New York with a fleet of transports..." (see).
Also on page 2 is a letter signed in type by: J. Adams, in which he announces his authority to propose and conclude a treaty with The Netherlands on behalf of the United States (see photos), all related to the treaty which would end the Revolutionary War. And pg. 2 has additional content concerning Arnold & Cornwallis, noting: "Mrs. Arnold, who accompanied her husband to England, was reckoned at Philadelphia one of the handsomess women in Europe..." and "When the brave Lord Cornwallis returned to New York, the Commander in Chief offered him many compliments but his Lordship declined them all, & dismissed an orderly serjeant who was sent to attend him, with this pointed sarcasm, that it was then too late for military assistants. So much does his Majesty admire the gallantry of Colonel Tarleton, that it is confidently reported he will soon have a very considerable promotion." With more on Arnold (see). Another item begins; "The capture of Lord Cornwallis has produced here the most agreeable & lively sensations..." (see).
Page 3 has from Fishkill "Extract from General Orders, Head Quarters, Newburgh, April 4, 1782" which begins: "The Commander in chief having returned & resumed the command of the main army, presents his thanks to Major General Heath...and covered the country so successfully against the depredations of the enemy...The General proposes to review the whole army by brigades..." (see). An item from Richmond notes: "We hear that General Greene has detached a body of Carolinians & Georgians, reinforced by a party of militia from Washington in this state, with a view to destroy the settlements of the unfriendly Indians upon the head waters of the Mobile."
Complete with four pages, this issue is in very nice and clean condition.
