October 05, 1780

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, October 5, 1780  Most of the front page is taken up with a report from Newfoundland concerning a naval encounter with the Americans in the vicinity, and includes the "Names of Ships & Vessels taken by his Majesty's Squadron under the Command of rear Admiral Edwards at Newfoundland" (see for portions). Page 2 has an item noting: "Mr.Henry Laurens, late President of the Congress...is one of the greatest & best men American has ever produced..." with more (see image). Another item notes: "...learn from good authority that it is the determination of the court of France to carry on the war in America with the greatest vigour; for which purpose...a very considerable body of troops will be ready for embarkation..." (see image).
The back page has some American items including: "...that Mr. Lauren's chief business with the States of Holland was to negotiate a loan for 600,000 pounds sterling & endeavour to obtain their condescension to a treaty of commerce with America & it is reported that France had offered to become guarantee for the punctual payment of the loan...It is said that Mr. Laurens was to have appeared at the Hague in the same character that Dr. Franklin does at Paris..." with a bit more,
Eight pages, 8 1/4 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice, clean condition.
