NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, July 21, 1821

* President John Quincy Adams
* 4th of July speech

The most significant content is "Mr. Adams' Oration" by John Quincy Adams on the anniversary of the 4th of July. This is one of the more stirring & patriotic speeches ever made by a President but is perhaps more significant for the pronouncements concerning foreign policy. In response to those who advocated American support for Spanish America's independence movement from Spain, Adams noted that American policy was moral support for but not armed intervention on behalf of independence movements, making the memorable statement that America: "...goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all..." (see for this & the beginning). This speech is included in full and takes nearly 6 pages.
Inside has a small head: "Missouri" which includes: "...report of a select committee of the legislature of Missouri on the matters relating to the admission of that state, or territory, into the union...".
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/2 inches, close-trimmed at the bottom one-third of a margin affecting some words in the Adams speech on 2 pages, otherwise very nice condition.
This small size newspaper began in 1811 and was a prime source for national political news of the first half of the 19th century. As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
