January 19, 1793
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Massachusetts, Jan. 19, 1793 Jean-Pierre Blanchard was a famous French balloonist, having made his first flight in Paris in 1784, just 3 1/2 months after the very first successful manned balloon flight. He later toured Europe with his balloon, and then ventured to America where his flight of January 9, 1793 was the very first manned balloon flight in North America.
This newspaper reports that flight, with a page 2 article headed "M. Blanchard" and beginning: "The celebrated aerenaut made his 45th voyage in a magnificent balloon from...city of Philadelphia, the 9th inst., amidst the acclamations of an immense concourse of spectators. His ascension was majestick; he saluted his terrestrial gazers with his flag..." with more, including mention of the President being a witness. See the photo for the full text.
A very significant report of a major "first" in aviation. Complete in four pages, nice condition.
