March 31, 1781

THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, March 31, 1781

* Generals 'Mad' Anthony Wayne & Benedict Arnold
* General Sir Banastre Tarleton

The ftpg. includes: "...state of facts when the last ship left New York. The remainder of the French fleet...were preparing to sail on some expedition. Arnold was blocked up by 3 French ships & was entrenched, waiting for relief...His situation was esteemed at New York very dangerous. Tarleton's affair is a most complete and fatal defeat; & well informed persons there express their apprehensions of the consequences to the southern army. General Washington...had made a movement across the North River..." and more (see photos).
Page 4 has a very nice: "Account of the Late Disturbances in the Pennsylvania Line...". Because of the poor conditions under which the continental soldiers endured their enlistments, mutinous actions threatened to revolt against Washington's army, causing much disruption in the war effort. This report gives much detail of the events, and includes: "...General Wayne, uncertain whether this mutiny arose from British influence & dissatisfaction or only from grievances they so loudly complained of, thought it most prudent to get this disorderly body...organized into some regularity in which situation the mutineers might be treated..." with more (see photos).
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, very nice condition.
