THE STARS AND STRIPES, Mediterranean Edition, April 30, 1945

* Benito Mussolini executed by Italian patriots
* Rare United States military issue
* "Benito Finito"

The front page has a three line banner headline: "Partisans Execute iL Duce; 5th In Milan, 8thIn Venice; 7th Army Enters Munich". The article on the death of Benito Mussolini begins: "Benito Mussolini, arch enemy of a free world, has been executed by Italian Patriots. He death by a firing squad of Partisans was first announced this morning..." and a bit further on: "Mussolini was shot along with 17 of his henchmen and his last mistress..." with more (see photos for portions), carrying over to the back page as well.

Seeing need to add a "light-hearted" touch to the article, the one column photo of Mussolini is captioned: "Benito Finito" (see).

Much other reporting on World War II from the closing days of the War in Europe including ftpg: "Truman To Inform nation When Germany Collapses". Page 5 gives a hint of more tragic news to come on the Holocaust with: "Buchenwald 'Worse Than A Battlefield' " (see). The back page includes a battle map headed: "Getting Ready For The Knockout" showing the advance of troops from Norther Italy into Switzerland & Germany.

Complete in 8 page, very nice condition. Great to have this historic content in a military newspaper.
