October 22, 1666

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, October 22, 1666  An extremely early issue of this title, the oldest continually published English language newspaper in the world, having begun just the previous year in 1665 and still printing today. This is issue #97.
Amongst the various reports from various cities in Europe is a front page item from Norwich, England, which lists the count of those who died from the Plague which was ravaging much of Europe at this time: "The account of our Bill of Mortality for this last week is as followes, buried of all diseases 137 whereof of the Plague 127."
It is uncommon to find mention of the Plague in period newspapers, and more uncommon for such on the front page. This issue was published less than two months after the Great Fire of London.
Complete as a single sheet newspaper, 6 1/2 by 10 5/8 inches. Some loss at the spine margin but not causing any loss of text, plus browning at the edges.
