April 04, 1882
BOSTON DAILY ADVERTISER, Massachusetts, April 4, 1882 The bottom of the first column of the front page has a report headed: "A Notorious Outlaw Killed" which is the report of the death of the bandit Jesse James.
The report reads in part: "...Charles & Robert Ford, who at one time belonged to the James gang...have been in St. Joseph for a week for the purpose of arresting Jesse James; but being afraid, as is alleged to make the arrest, or the attempt, they shot him down...and then surrendered to the authorities...There is tremendous excitement over the affair...The wife of the desperado was on the spot a few moments after the shooting & wept piteously over his remains..." with more (see).
We have found that not all newspapers of the period reported the death of Jesse James, and those that did often relegated the report to an inside page. It is uncommon to find a front page accounting.
Complete in 8 pages, a minor page 2 archival mend at the top, otherwise in very nice, clean condition.
