THE DAILY UNION, Washington, D.C., June 21, 1849
* Black borders, mourning rules, in memory of President James K. Polk
* Death report on James K. Polk
This issue has wide black borders, called "mourning rules", on all columns on all four pages, in memory of the death of James K. Polk who died 6 days previous. Nice to have this gesture of remembrance in a Washington, D.C. newspaper.
Page 3 contains a report headed: "Death of Ex-President Polk" which begins:
"A telegraphic despatch from Nashville reached us last night, announcing the death of ex-President Polk. It is in the words following: 'Ex-President James K. Polk is no more. He died last evening of chronic diarrhea. It was previously known that Mr. Polk was suffering from a severe attack of disease but we were not prepared for the said intelligence which has now reached us..." with much more (see photos), taking a bit over half a column.
Another report on pg. 3 is headed: "A Stab at the Illustrious Dead" (see photos) which also is on James K. Polk.
It is always desirable to have a presidential death report in a Washington, D.C. newspaper.
The balance of the issue has various news of the day and much on politics, plus many ads as well.
Complete in 4 pages, very nice, clean condition.
