April 16, 1912

THE DENVER POST, Colorado, April 16, 1912 This issue has a great banner head announcing: "1,300 PERISH WHEN TITANIC SINKS; 866 KNOWN TO BE RESCUED" with a large front page photo showing the Titanic superimposed over a photo of downtown Denver giving a sense of the huge size of the ship. Nice subheads as well: "Wives Dragged From Husbands to Safety" "Scantily-Clad Women & Children Floating in Open Boats in Sea of Ice Watch Ship Go Down With Loved Ones & Friends Aboard"  and one has a local connection with what would later be national importance:  "H.R. Rood and Mrs. Brown Certainly Sailed on Titanic--Denver Society Woman Wrote Nieces of Her Intention to Sail ...". This was the now-famous "Unsinkable Molly Brown", a friend of Mark Twain as both were born in Hannibal, Missouri, and a photo of her is on page 4.  Molly Brown was reputed to have rowed for seven and a half hours and delivered herself and her passengers to safety on Lifeboat No.6. She became known as the only woman to have done so and thus earned her nickname "Unsinkable". Later, she liked to entertain the society leaders with her picturesque descriptions of the event and in the 1960's a Broadway musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" was a big hit.  This issue has a wealth of additional photos and headlines on the inside pages making this a terrific accounting of the event, both textually and graphically. And this is likely the only paper to give such coverage to Molly Brown as she was a Denver resident (played by Kathy Bates in the movie "Titanic").  Tape mends on the margins of pg. 2 for strengthening, some chipping & tears at margins, a lengthy pg. 1 tear has been archivally repaired (almost unnoticeable). Complete in 16 pages.
